"One Can Make A Difference"

BREA JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
29TH ANNUAL AWARDS PROGRAM

By Chuck Lee and Don Hull

This year's award ceremonies were attended by Catherine Houston, Don Hull, and Dr. Tom Green.  Catherine did all the work or present the awards.  After she and Don Hull were introduced, Catherine spoke a bit about Kiwanis, what we do, and invited every one to come to a meeting which was met with thunderous applause from Tom Green in the audience.

Prior to the presentation of these scholarships, Brea Kiwanis used to give the money to the school to buy books. But the school decided that since their library was well stocked, they had hoped we could develop a scholarship for those that excelled in literature and also those that persevered in the face of adversity in education.

The James Setterlund scholarship is also funded solely by Brea Kiwanis.  Mr. Setterlund was an outstanding example of courage and determination while acting as principal for Brea Junior High School.  He had developed cancer and even though the pain and the cancer eventually took its course, he work as much as he could to make it to school and work with the children of Brea.

Mr. Joe DuPuy is a past member and newsletter editor of the Kiwanis Club of Brea who was instrumental in starting the annual Kiwanis Essay Contest.  Brea Kiwanis established the Joe DuPuy Memorial Scholarship for Literature Award in his memory.  This year Mr. DuPuy’s son, Loren,  contributed additional funds to our scholarship in memory of his dad and his passion for literature.  Catherine assisted Loren with the presentation.

Catherine presented the James E. Setterlund Awards to Katherine Hoffman and Elizabeth Stockler.

The Joe DuPuy Memorial Scholarship for Literature Award was presented by Loren and Catherine to Cherisse Green.

Congratulations to all the winners.  Click on the small thumbnail images below for a larger photo.
