The Kiwanis Club of Brea returned to its La Habra roots to celebrate the 57th Installation of its Officers and Directors. At the El Cholo Restaurant, President Scott Schaffer welcomed members, their wonderful spouses who magnanimously allow the members to participate in and contribute to the club’s successes, and guests.  Among the evening’s dignitaries were incoming Lt. Governor Shirley McCracken, outgoing Lt. Governor Mike McKay, Annetta Scott, Cynthia Holmberg from the La Habra Kiwanis Club, Pastor Dave Rader representing the Brea Rotary Club, and Pastors Mike and Laurie O’Brien’s daughter and son-in-law Joanna and Jeremy Welsh.

One of the program’s highlights every year is the acknowledgement of those members who strive for and achieve perfect attendance.  This year saw five members enter the books with streaks of one year each as follows:

Henry Eagar 1 Year
Sam Graciano
Chuck Lee
Mike O'Brien
Matt Vessey

Dave Worker 2 Years
Dennis O'Hern

Scott Shaffer 3 Years

Lynda Arnold 8 Years!
David Coley

Tom Green 17 Years!!

Dean "Old Man" Hall 23 Years!!!

President Scott applauded the members who earned two banner patches for the club with their extraordinary efforts: Don Hull for creating and maintaining the Best Club Web-Site in the District, and Dave Worker for arranging 16 Interclub meetings within the Division for the Round Robin.

Incoming President Mike O’Brien recounted the election of Chuck Lee as Kiwanian of the Year.  Because Chuck could not be at this installation dinner, the announcement and plaque presentation were made to Chuck at the Sep 11 breakfast meeting. The Kiwanian of the Year is chosen by the membership to recognize that member who best reflects what it means to be a Kiwanian by actively participating in club projects, by being an inspiration to other club members, and by working selflessly for the betterment of the club in the administrative year.

Scott continued the tradition of the President’s Award by naming Dean Hall and Dennis O’Hern to share this honor (a three-peat for Mr. O'Hern).  Dean, a previous Award winner, was particularly important to Scott’s success not only with his sage advice and his usual leadership of the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Toys for Tots projects, but more particularly for his dogged determination to tie up the loose ends of the Kiwanis Club of Brea Scholarship Fund which culminated with the granting of three $1000 scholarships this year. The list of other prior President’s Award winners includes Tom Green and Don Hull.

On behalf of the entire membership, former club Presidents Dean Hall and Tom Green teamed to commend Scott Schaffer for his year of leadership and hard work by presenting him a commemorative plaque.

Projecting an effective date of Oct 1, incoming Lt. Governor Shirley McCracken retired the current Board of Directors with a few words and a wave of her hand; and then installed incoming Directors: Lynda Arnold, Henry Eagar, Tom Green, Dean Hall, Catherine Houston, and Chuck Lee.

With words of encouragement and challenge to each individual incoming officer, Shirley installed Mike O’Brien as President, Dave Worker as President-Elect, Matt Vessey as Vice President, Danny Hernandez as Treasurer, Dennis O’Hern as Secretary, and Scott Schaffer as Immediate Past President.

Shirley offered her thoughts on the 2008 – 2009 administrative year.  She

  • intends to develop her Kiwanis Team

  • declared Governor Dan Connolly’s theme of Growth Produces Service

  • cited her major objective to increase membership of the Division by 33 members; and

  • declared the need to resurrect the Buena Park club through the participation of the entire Division.

Newly installed President Mike O’Brien concluded the evening by announcing three goals for his administrative year:

  • substantially increase Club membership

  • institute the Terrific Kids program

  • have one special social outing, just for fun

Mike then held aloft for all to gaze upon his genuine Aimee Semple McPherson model tambourine that will collect the fines, fees, and happy & sad dollars during the year. To test its efficacy, Lt. Governor Shirley McCracken christened the piece with its first dollar which it accepted with alacrity.
