4th of July Country Fair

and Bacon Breakfast

By Charlie Phillips

It's not breakfast without bacon!  Dean Hall and Danny Hernandez enjoy their shower of bacon grease as they prepare for the impending massive demand for nature's artery rejuvenator, BACON.  You want a side of pancakes?

This year the Country Fair was held on Friday July 4th and organized by Pres. and Dr. Tom Green.

The 4th of July Country Fair will be remembered as a signature event success for both Kiwanis and the city of Brea! The event has been happening for over 40+ years and it seems to get better with age.

Thanks to Dr. Green's attention to detail, Dave Worker's calm approach making details fit in place, the work ethic of many Kiwanians, Key Clubbers, and Troop 801 Boy Scouts the Pancake Breakfast kickoff set the tone for yet one more great Country fair event! The generous contributions from Eric Schumacher and Carl's Jr., Hollis O'Brian and Parties by Panache, Rick Ellis and Mother's Market and the smart shopping fill in by Dr. Tom made the Brea Kiwanis Signature Fundraiser a fundraising success.

We would be remiss not to mention Joseph Salazar's successful sales pitches for place mat advertising ... He sold all ten ad spaces accounting for approximately a quarter of the gross fundraising $'s. The 'Place Mats' have been a great practical and aesthetic addition to the event. They were designed by Chuck Clough, former club member, and printed by Chuck's Printing Services.

The 'Pancake Trailer', containing two large cooking griddles, was loaned to us from Richard Hardy and the Kiwanis Club of Placentia. Although the trailer is an attractive cooking vehicle, the cooks up top were being baked along with the cooked pancakes. A special thank you to the batter maker Rick Ellis and, cooks Alan Nakamura, Bill Murray, Dean Hall and Danny Hernandez for smiling all the way through 4 hours of cooking smoke and heat. Dean worked double duty cooking bacon with his wife Chris on our external grill and moving to the trailer to cook a portion of bacon.

It's great to be young...ask the Brea Key Clubbers...All seven, including Division 30N LTG Emiko Kaneoka, worked decorating the serving areas and served all 4 hours during breakfast. They were also there for Dr. Tom until noon+ cleaning up the serving area...There were 7 Boy Scouts helping to serve coffee, provide placemats and keep the eating area clean. With the Key Clubbers and Boy Scouts working the Breakfast area it left the extra Kiwanians standing about with little to do but enjoy the great Country Fair ambiance.

There were 15 Club members at the Pancake Breakfast including not often seen, Todd Beckley, Rich and Josh Goedl. Rich helped to set up on the 3rd and helped set up and cook on the 4th. Josh worked with the Boy scouts serving coffee, milk and juice in the serving line...Carol, my wife, and I helped Sam Graciano collect the recommended $5 donations for breakfast and hand out plates...My best job was taking the cash box home and counting all the money

Like McDonalds, over a billion calories were served.
